Horse and Rider of the Month

  Carolyn and Moonshine

It has been almost two years since I purchased my Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse from the Fun-E-Farm in Collegeville, PA. At the time, I was searching for a seasoned Mountain Horse as I had heard so much positive feedback about Mountain Horses. Being a heavy duty trail rider who travels and camps with my horses all over the North and Central Eastern states, I needed a sturdy, athletic horse that could do it all with a quiet, willing and gentle disposition. Terry at the Fun-E-Farm did not have an older horse available at the time, but assured me that one 2 ½ year old would meet my needs.

Maybe it was the excitement of the new millennium, but on that cold and blustery January day, a day the woods were filled with hunters (unknown to us due to an extended hunt), I rode this
young buckskin (wrong color for hunt day) Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse. Much to their credit, Terry and Steven of the Fun-E-Farm had done their homework and this horse reflected it. He had an extremely solid foundation. Without hesitation, this young horse went through it all - rivers, ravines, downed trees, bridges, traffic, hunters, dogs and gun shots while remaining perfectly calm ! He had the right disposition and attitude. I, or should I say "he", was sold. He even loaded beautifully for the ride home. I named him "Moonshine", a fun reflection of his southern heritage.

In the two years since, Moonshine has traveled all over. He trailers, picket ties and adapts well to the many diversified environments he has been introduced to. Moonshine has grown quite a bit and has filled out into a beautiful big boned Mountain Horse with a proud appearance. The best part is his gait. As he physically matures, he gets smoother and smoother. We are learning a lot and growing together. I really am enjoying my Mountain Horse and am looking forward to lots of fun trail adventures together.
